Wayne County A water main break in downtown Detroit on Friday caused the evacuation and closure of the historic Guardian Building, recently bought, renovated and occupied by Wayne County. The building is filled with hundreds of county employees and other business tenants.

The Tecumseh High School boys swim team placed 16th of 36 teams in the Division 3 state championships which concluded Saturday at Eastern Michigan Univerity. The Indians scored 46 points. Adrian finished tied with Ferndale for 34th place with two points apiece.

Wayne A clean-air ordinance passed unanimously Tuesday by the Detroit City Council prohibits commercial truck drivers from idling their engines for more than five minutes during any one-hour period. Violators will be ticketed.

Ruth Goode lost her job of 23 years the day before she learned she would receive the Women's Opportunity Award from Soroptimist International of Oakland County. "This is another adventure in my life and you all have given me such a great feeling of achievement," the Madison Heights resident said at the organization's awards dinner in Royal Oak.

Wayne A kitchen fire killed a 67-year-old man Tuesday in his west-side home that was packed with books, magazines, videos and DVDs. Firefighters had problems making their way through the house near Greenfield and Warren because of the hoarded items, said Detroit Fire Department Lt. Rance Dixon.
